Talking with the crow is an annoying affair as expected. At least now, Yuu is finally an official learner of the school. Even if they're just half-a-student with the loud talking cat. Well, maybe you did corner him a little bit by using his own electronics against him but you're pretty sure he enjoyed it for some reason if the way he literally blurted out 'mommy-' at you was anything to go by—

heres the thing abt kairi. i don't think she's poorly written, i think she's poorly executed. like there's a conflict/lack of cohesive vision for her and they're trying to shoehorn her into a role she does not fit.

nomura, from kh1, has clearly always wanted kairi to remain a link to the past/manifestation of fond memories of childhood/like a bittersweet hometown that isn't quite the same when you come back as an adult. that's the role he has consistently, persistently assigned to her. and there's nothing wrong with that. not every character ever has to take an active role and be a hero and do Things. sometimes characters exist to embody an allegory, or symbolism, or an idea. that was kairi, initially. embodiment of home, safety, comfort, childhood. for that matter, riku was the future, the unknown, growing up and letting childhood go. sora, of course, a boy coming of age and being torn between the two.

so consequently i've never understand the choice to make her a keyblade wielder when she's already a princess of heart twice over. like it or not the princesses of heart have an established role in the story and it's not fighting on the front lines. she could have been a leader and taken an active role in her own way if they really wanted, without ever needing to hold a keyblade and be a Chosen One, Also!(tm). in this way she also would have maintained a cohesive narrative role in the story. her path would still be diverging from sora's, and it would be as bittersweet and nostalgic as it was in kh1 without the clownery than her involvement in endgame kh2 onward has been mired in.

what clownery, you ask? kairi literally cannot grow as a person while in sora's orbit. we've seen it happen again and again, any growth she gets is away from sora and any time she's near him she regresses as a character. this is because, again, she is absolutely cemented in the minds of the writers as The Nostalgic Past that sora is holding onto. in the context of the kh narrative, she can literally be nothing else to him. there's no more growth to be had between them. hence, every time their relationship ends up the focus in a scene you can't help but feel the rapidly growing distance between where they once were vs where they now are as individuals. this relationship can, imo, ONLY be regressive to both of them in the context of kh's overarching narrative where kairi is constantly (and overtly) being framed as Sora's Idealized Childhood. or, as a prize he 'wins' when the story ends. the two are fairly connected in kh.

back on track, having kairi remain a princess of heart and not a keyblade wielder also would've solved the problem of the writing team having to shelve/fridge her every time they want riku+sora to go on another romantic getawa - uhhh adventure together. like she was asleep for a year post kh3? and now she's going to train with aqua while riku goes to rescue the love of his l - i mean bestest best boy friend again? you're joking.

it just stinks of trying to girlbossify a character so she can 'keep up' with her male counterparts in the eyes of media illiterate consumers who associate a lack of a weapon with a lack of power. dawg we're past that. female characters can be relevant, important, interesting and powerful without following in the exact footsteps of their male counterparts. and this is to say nothing of kairi's keyblade bequeathing being a relative accident and how it creates a pretty glaring plot hole because somehow xion and roxas, sora's nobodies, can wield keyblades at will but namine can't? okay. yes, perhaps we just haven't been 'shown' her wielding a keyblade. maybe. but i think it seriously indicates that they had no intention of making kairi a keyblade wielder in the first place.

and don't get me wrong, if they intended on changing/overhauling her role going forward i would understand making her not just a wielder but a guardian of light. problem is, they have already established she's not going to be fighting/active in the next game. she is, yet again, the home they are returning to and not the future they're moving towards. this, consequently, will continue causing some major tonal dissonance among those who either consciously or unconsciously recognize that kairi is not meant to be where she is currently placed in the narrative. she's SHOWN to be just a regular girl who still to this day does not particularly want to go adventuring, and yet we're TOLD again and again that she's a warrior now, riding on sora and riku's coattails regrettably. it's just so tonally off.

Your father couldn’t have been more blatant when it came to favoritism. It was always [Y/N] this, and [Y/N] that. As the youngest out of all your siblings you were given special priority as a child up until the present.

‘[Y/N] is just the cutest, can’t you see?’

What was even worse was that Kid absolutely enabled such behavior.

Instead of being bitter like a normal person, he joined in on the spoiling.

You wouldn’t have minded it if it was just that. Who wouldn’t love to be spoiled by gods themselves?

But Kid always piled nagging on top of it all. In fact, it was twice as much as how he’d drown you in gifts.

‘[Y/N], fix your posture! What if you get back problems at a young age?!’

You were slouching for just a moment. In your room. Alone. How’d he even get in—

‘[Y/N] what is with your hair ? Your symmetry, it’s ruined!’

You only had a single lock of hair out of place. You had just woken up. Your breakfast was abandoned as he had yanked you to take a bath and style your hair.

“[Y/N]—“

“兄上!” You yelled. Swerving your body so fast that you almost fell down just to meet him eye to eye. You took a deep breath first, calming yourself as to keep your voice steady. “Please leave me alone. Aren’t you supposed to be away on a mission ? “

“But—“

“They’re right, Kid. Besides the sooner we wrap things up the sooner you’ll get to hang out with [Y/N]-様” Liz came to your rescue. Honestly if it weren’t for her, you were sure Kid would have been literally glued to you with how clingy he could be. He treated you like the most entrancing painting there could ever be, as if a second not looking at you would kill him.

At the realization of such an idea. Kid finally composed himself and dashed off. With not a farewell or goodbye wave in sight.

“Don’t worry, [Y/N]-様! We gotcha covered.” Patty squeezed your cheeks. Even she wasn’t immune to your cute charms.

“My wish to be left alone extends to the both of you. ”

“Eek!” The two teleported 5 feet away from you as they heard the tone of your voice. Despite being a powerless Shinigami, your presence demanded fear and respect. You were known for being an even more uptight version of your brother which was an achievement in itself.

“R-right! On our way!”

As the son of the embodiment of law and order. Death the Kid had a terrifying obsession with perfection. Particularly the perfection that is symmetry. The beauty of balanced reflection in its most immaculate form. The aesthetic of faultless proportions and details that make the whole so pleasing to the eyes.

The aesthetic of you.

It was natural for siblings to lovingly hate each other’s existence. Kid has literally battled his own brother.

But in that principle’s wake was your existence.

His passion to beat Asura seemed so human, so insignificant when it came to you.

Unlike him you had no ‘Lines of Sanzu’ and was thus never considered to be a candidate to become a Death God. You were never a threat. So he had no problem accepting his Father’s doting nature towards you.

You were always so cute. Always working hard for a future you wanted. A future that’ll never be yours. Your ambition was so infectious that along with succeeding his father, he wanted to be perfect for you.

You only deserved the best brother. One who had his lines completed. One that didn’t look like ugly, asymmetrical pig that he was in the present.

You weren’t home, as always. But Kid had gotten skilled at finding where you are. Call it his brotherly instincts but the most it would take for him to find you was a day.

You were gone for a month.

When Kid found you, you looked even more aggrieved than usual. The scowl on your face made heavier when you saw him.

The talk on the way back home was awkwardly silent. Despite that he still cherished the moment. It was rare to have someone as amazing as you alone all to himself.

“兄上?”

“Hm?”

“Why are you such a creep?”

“[Y-Y/N] . . . “ You gaze at your brother as crocodile tears fell from his beautiful face.

“If I disappeared that means I don’t want people to look for me. So don’t waste your time searching. Why can’t you understand that I want to be alone?”

“But—“

“Look for me and I’ll hate you. More than I already do.”

“You . . . hate me ?”

“Wasn’t it obvious?” You blew a strand out of your face that Kid often waxed to keep things ‘perfect’. Surprised that he doesn’t comment on it. His eyes have completely dimmed.

“. . . No . . .”

“If you died I wouldn’t care. At all. So don’t extend your sympathy towards me. It’s disgusting not to mention patronizing.” The distance between you two grew more as he stayed still and you kept walking.

Your final words to him goes unheard at that point. “You’re the next God of Death. Respectfully speaking, act like one.”

Kid couldn’t stop thinking about your words from before. Siblings naturally had love-hate relationships. But hearing you say that up front still left him shaken.

During battle, he kept muttering and muttering, completely unfocused. He would have been hurt terribly if it weren’t for the others shoving him around. Even then, he didn’t so much as budge as he was thrown to a wall. “No . . . it couldn’t be . . . have they perhaps . . . “

“What’s up with him?” Black Star stared at him while cleaning his nose with his pinky. The fight wasn’t dire at the very least and he was used to Kid’s unorthodox personality, but this time the young Shinigami was somehow more out of it than usual.

“Less talking, more fighting.” Maka scolded. She had long since given up trying to get Kid to fight and instead instructed Liz and Patty to wield each other. It wasn’t ideal but it was at least functional, unlike a certain raven-haired young man right now.

“That’s it! They must’ve hit puberty!” Death the Kid suddenly shouted. The side of his fist hits his palm as a lightbulb switches on in his mind.

“Not this again . . . “ Liz rolled her eyes. She tried moving him from an incoming attack but he doesn’t budge an inch.

“Oh, my poor [Y/N] they must be so confused! They don’t hate me, it’s just that I’ve been lacking as a brother!” His eyes sparkled at the revelation that hit him. “I must go back and tell them how much I love them!” He took off, forsaking the rest to find [Y/N].

He gets about a meter away before Liz carried him back.

“Nuh-uh. We have a kishin to take down!”

“My sibling takes priority!” He flailed around in her arms, slapping her in the process.

“Even I’m not like this towards Patty. You need to stop worrying about them so much. You’re more like a nagging wife at this point! Face it, Kid. They don’t like you much less want you around all the time.” Liz scolded him. Getting more and more irritated at his behavior by the second. You’d think she’d get used to his sibcon tendencies, but it still managed to amaze her how little he cared for anything but [Y/N].

“Oh no . . . what have you done?” Maka covered her mouth in shock.

“H-Huh? What do mean? I just talked some sense into—“ Liz doesn’t notice he stopped thrashing til he screeched into her ears.

“That’s it! You’re a genius Liz!”

“I am?”

“In order to keep my baby sibling safe and sound I have to marry them!”

“Wait what— That’s not what I meant—“

“I’ll get the papers sorted right away!”

And he’s gone. Poof. Just like that. Liz completely frozen in place.

“I pray [Y/N]-様 extends you their mercy.” Tsubaki, now in her human form, bowed. Genuinely fearing for Liz’s well-being.

Patty, on the other hand, stuck her tongue out. “Bye Bye, sis!”

“Patty, not you too!”

MONTHS EARLIER…

Your Father was an eccentric being. He annoyed you to no end but thankfully not as much as your brother did.

You inherited his obsession with Peace. Something that you defined as moments that you were alone. Free to just exist and not worry about being perfect all the time. Peace to you was the lack of your brother, the embodiment of chaos.

You’ve always wished to be separated from him, but knowing there was a potential for that to actually happened gave you the first taste of fear.

Is this what humans felt? This adrenaline rush, this excitement? All that in addition to dread and sadness at the same time?

“Is it true?”

“What is it, my darling?”

“Is it true that when 兄上’s lines connect . . . you . . . “

“Where did you hear this, child?” Death moved forward. His large body shadowed yours.

You neither move away or closer. Instead you stayed still. Eyes firmly kept in place. On his.“Answer me, 父上.”

“Yes.” The god looked to the skies. Even he had a time to depart from this world. Death was something not even the divine can escape.

“Will I also . . . ?”

“I don’t know.” His large gloved hand extended to pat your head.

“Then he’ll be all alone?”

“Hopefully not. Are you worried for him—“

You replied before he could even finish, “Why would I be? He’s the one responsible for worrying between the two of us.”

Death then picked you up. Holding you close to his face.

“父上？”

“Yes, my darling?”

You said nothing, stepping forward to hold your creator in an embrace.

“I love you too, child.”

THE PRESENT…

“[Y/N]?”

Death the Kid isn’t human. Far from it. He’s a god. He represented Law and Order; Death.

But in the face of all this, his responsibilities, his status, his entire being. He feels so utterly meek, so awfully human when he was with you.

Gods aren’t supposed to have favorites. Gods are supposed to maintain a balance when it came to their affections over mortals.

But for you, and only for you. Kid lowers himself. To love, to fear, to worship.

“What?” Your small hands barely half the size of his reached to cup his face. “Spit it out, 豕.”

“Will you stay with me . . . for the rest of eternity?”

“You’re my family aren’t you? Of course I will.”

“Yes. Yes, of course. You’ll always be here for your brother.”

“Tch. Misplaced worries is a weakness, get rid of it.” Your hands moved to leave his face, but he doesn’t let it happen. Instead he traps it there, where it belonged.

“Anything for you, my dearest sibling.”

Right. Kid had nothing to worry about. You were here with him. Living, breathing. Still as perfect as you’ll ever be. You were all that he had. You were all that he needed.

Still. He could not shake away the feeling of nothingness within his heart.

Notes: [These are mostly for me + explanations so feel free to skip] Y/N uses formal speech and ways to call their family members.

For Kid they use, Aniue and for Death they call him Chichiue which means exalted or honorable brother and father respectively.

It’s only when they asked Death to answer them that they drop the formalities and use casual language. But even then they still call him exalted father.

From what I studied, formal speech in some situations can be quite rude and robotic. So despite seeming like they respect their fam they’re actually being condescending if not distant. I might be completely wrong though so feel free to correct me.

It’s kinda like going up to friend of yours for years and using the same extremely polite language you might use for strangers or seniors in work.

Lastly, in case you didn’t understand; in part iv DTK replaces [Y/N] but made them more childlike, completely changing the way they spoke. Mirroring the way Death created him to be a better version of Asura. Also 4 / IV sounds like Death in Japanese.

Anddd a little reminder that whenever I tag a character as Yandere that means they have unhealthy ways to love. Please do not romanticize or seek to replicate it in real life. Despite adoring his sibling, Kid subconsciously looks down on them and sees them as powerless. True love always comes with respect people. He also changes a ton of personality traits for the replacement, only keeping their looks and disdain towards him. He only ever ‘loved’ certain parts of them.

What Hozier song fits your characters?

I GOTTA PICK JUST ONE EACH?? Damn, sick and twisted /lh /silly

It’s taken me a while to cook on this but I’m answering this at an appropriate time since I literally see Hozier live tomorrow-

Ulysses (Fable SMP): Now for a long time during Fable’s run I said Eat Your Young because it really fits early Ulysses and the Telchin, HOWEVER I think in totality as a character, Ulysses is embodied best by Empire Now. The sense of pained but freeing reflection, looking back on the pain and destruction caused by empire and greed for so long, and coming away from that bringing hope for a future that might not be perfect, but will be better. A future he does get to see. Hourable mention is that Ulysses and Vesperae are Sedated coded.

Virgil (SkyBound SMP): This was trickier than I thought, honestly, for both general vibes and plot reasons I can’t go into for spoilers. The issue is almost that Virgil is a very optimistic character at his core despot his paranoia, and it’s hard finding a Hozier song with exactly the right vibe. That being said, he is, after all, a carrion bird. And he is in a world that’s falling, trying to pull people closer as it does. For many reasons, Virgil is I, Carrion (Icarian).

Daniel Thorns (Cantripped): Listen… listen we all know it’s Nobody’s Soldier. We all know Nobody’s Solider just IS DAN. Beyond the individual elements, even down to smelling like a bonfire, the constant balance between being a folkhero and being a complete mess of a man. The desperation to hold onto the roughness of life so that he’s not sanitised to the point of deification, but being so unable to truly grasp the grittiness of the world because he is inherently seen as something more, and it puts a barrier around him. Honourable mentions are Arsonists Lullaby, cause Flamewalker and the baggage he carries with that, but also It Will Come Back IS SO NEPH AND DAN. THATS THEIR SONG. THATS DANPHRUS RIGHT THERE I POINT AT IT. I SHAKE THEM.

Leopold (Terramortis SMP): Again, there’s a lot of spoilers potential with assigning Leo a song, since we haven’t seen all of his story yet. I think I want to say Like Real People Do. The urge to just sit and ignore his problems. Choosing bliss through ignorance; not asking questions, not thinking hard enough about the bugs and the dirt. Just wanting things to be easier and live a little longer. Honourable mention that Too Sweet makes me think about Julius and Leopold… 👀

C.W Hare (Wild West SMP): Again there’s some spoilers potential here. I initially wanted to say Jackboot Jump. And that is incredibly CW coded… but I don’t think it’s perfect. The same with Talk. Both are so him, but not quite it. I think the most accurate as their songs is Abstract (Psychopomp). There’s so much about it, about the grasping onto glimpses of a life in those final moments. The desperation of holding onto a life. The animal motifs too just feel perfect “I will not be great, but I’m grateful to get through”, just… it makes me think about him a lot.

Thank you for the links. Just for future reference though, that blog blocked me awhile back for reasons I can only guess at so I had to find another way to read the posts.

My biggest issue with these kinds of analyses is how it really has to ignore how toh executes its themes and rely on historical and political realities and awkwardly tie it to the show.

Belos may be a metaphor for colonization and oppression but good luck finding anything consistent in the show to actually demonstrate that. Belos may have been inspired by fundamentalists conservatives and he may speak like one, but on a societal level, the Boiling Isles is not a good representation of a world run by a religious zealot.

There are no wild witches that are routinely persecuted; Eda is able to walk around openly (save for one episode) with no fear of being arrested, Luz is able to multi-track despite Bump's initial misgivings about the EC potentially withdrawing funding from the school (something that never happens) no one actually treats the Titan like a divine entity despite Belos' reign being founded on that very premise, and the citizens are allowed to openly defy the emperor's potential execution of Eda--despite being the living embodiment of everything the people of the Boiling Isles are taught to fear.

There is one rule in the isles: no wild magic.

Outside of that, witches are free to live as they wish. Joining a coven is seen more like choosing a career path and not something one must do or risk ostracization. Eda doesn't suffer because she's a wild witch. Not really. The narrative focuses more on her curse and how she isolated herself because of that and had to turn to crime to make ends' meet.

Because of this, it's difficult to really discuss Belos as a metaphor for colonization when the islands don't suffer or at least the show doesn't demonstrate why joining a coven is bad outside it being a requirement. So really the theme is freedom of choice rather than "the oppressed must overthrow the oppressor."

It's Belos' status as a Puritan that's doing the heavy-lifting in any kind of post that makes the claim that toh is about colonization. Which is why so many of these posts fall back on meta-analysis and tossing in historical references rather than what actually happens in the show.

As for Luz being an immigrant to the Boiling Isles....I mean I guess? The problem is that Luz never learns to appreciate the BI on its own terms because everything is handed to her; the issue of humans not being able to eat the BI's food is dropped early and the only threats she faces are scammers. A better depiction of a girl-going-to-a-fantasy world-as-an-immigrant metaphor is Amphibia, in which Anne learns the culture and customs of Wartwood and even earns the title of Frog of the Year because of her progress and growth. We never get anything like that with Luz because Bonesborough doesn't have a distinct identity like Wartwood does. We don't get to know recurring side characters outside of Luz's clique at Hexside. Luz doesn't even work as an immigrant in Gravesfield because her problem isn't framed due to her heritage, the focus is on her overenthusiasm for Azura. Camila doesn't struggle fitting in because she's Dominican (and no, letting her hair get curly again is weak because it's literally the only example of her possibly changing herself to fit in). Her struggle is tied to her daughter and the grief they share over Manny's passing. So there's no evidence of the Nocedas having to "submit" to the dominant culture of Gravesfield because we don't know what Gravesfield's culture is. There's no oppression and Vee gets along fine despite coming from another dimension.

Finally, as for Luz's angst over being like Belos--that her anger makes her like him. Yeah no, this is weak. First of all, this is the first time that she expresses concern over being like him due to her anger. In the previous two episodes, the concern was that she "helped" Belos find the Collector and is therefore responsible for his rise and the subsequent centuries of suffering. Then, she's worried about always making mistakes and how that leads to more people being hurt. Next, in her nightmare sequence, she fears her friends secretly hate her because she helped Belos and is the cause of all this suffering so she might as well be him.

But now, her fear is being like him because she wanted the Collector to blast him and that Belos' desire to save humanity is uncomfortably close to her own.

Sorry what?

Luz previously rejected Belos's stated goal of saving humanity in King's Tide when she called him out on his hypocrisy. At every encounter, Luz calls Belos out on his bullshit, why is it now does she seriously consider that his goals are similar to her own?

Oh, so the Titan can alleviate her fears, validate her by calling her a "good witch," and throw out all the recent development of Belos' character and motivations because don't worry, he's not genuine. He's just a Symbol so we can ignore the hints of his backstory making him a more complicated character. (And believe me, Belos' story is just vague enough that you could interpret him in any number of ways).

To conclude, I've noticed a trend in fan posts that develop a conclusion and work backwards from there, taking what they want from the show that fits to support their idea and ignore everything else. It's terrible analysis even if some good points are made.

I think it's very interesting to compare and contrast Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII. These two installments have so much in common, storywise and thematically. (As I understand it, this might have something to do with FF7's production being pretty rushed.)

In the past these similarities kind of annoyed me - but now I think it's interesting to see how these two stories play these ideas out.

I know there's been some amount of debate over whether FF6's Kefka or FF7's Sephiroth is the "better" villain, and honestly? We should not be pitting these bad boys against each other. Each character embodies a different yet realistic response to the same type of traumatic origin.

Both of these characters are the result of an evil empire's attempt to create the perfect soldier. Both were infused with the essence of other beings to give them great power. In being engineered and groomed to be the perfect weapons, both were dehumanized and denied healthy and loving family relationships. And both of them are depressed as hell.

Kefka's ultimate reaction to this is utter nihilism. He has no vision of a better future, but instead lives for whatever cheap thrills his power can give him. But these acts of violence don't fix his depression, and so he seeks more and more power and ultimately escalates to trying to destroy the world.

I've seen people saying that Kefka isn't a tragic villain, but he 100% is. He didn't have any say in what Emperor Gestahl did to him as a child. He was literally just a little kid. Unfortunately, he ultimately makes himself such a massive problem that there is no choice but to take him down. (The characters actually do try to tell him that his nihilistic worldview is wrong, but he won't hear it. He's just too far gone.)

Sephiroth, on the other hand, is actually seeking a better future. He very much wants to live in a better world than the one created by the capitalist empire that created him. But he's effectively a reactionary who (like all reactionaries) fundamentally misunderstands the problem and disregards a lot of very important nuance. Sephiroth concludes that a better world is only possible if he destroys all of humanity, which he's concluded they collectively deserve for harming the being he believes is his mother.

Each character tries to address their problems in different ways, but both end up repeating the cruelty of the institutions that produced them because they're ultimately just doing what they know. As they become gods (not false gods, not godlike, but actual gods), they come to fully embody the essence of the empires that created them. Each one has different mentalities and motives, but together they show us a very simple truth: that the only endgame of boundless greed and powerlust is the annihilation of everyone.

They say Lucifer lost his will to dream.

It was published in a book for goodness sake. Everyone in Hell knew what a failure he was. That being said, he did still have some creative outlets. He was a showman at heart, litering the seven rings with amusement parks, circus tents and stages; specifically made for Lillith's concerts, but it was used for other things as time went on.

In reality, he could create anything. Any item you could think of, he could conjure up with just the snap of his fingers. And he used that power often. A thriving realm wasn't just made of sinner's. It needed a working class. Now, when it came to Lucifer, he had all the same abilities as his heaven bound brothers. And they could create life. It was something Lucifer loved to do when he was above the clouds. Or used to, at least.

Don't get me wrong, his powers are still as strong as they were when he was an angel, but when he tried to create life like he used to, it.. it was just different. Like his power had some kind of distortion that he had to work around. Cute little cherubs turned into red skinned creatures with horns and goat legs, cats came out with one eye, and lambs came out with sharp teeth and wings.

He didn't mind them, and he would never take away a life just because of its appearance. So, he found work for them, no problem. They'll keep the realm running smoothly. And as he created more imps and other hellborn creatures, he became better at it. After some practice and honing of his skills he created, what he would call, his best work. A handful of creatures he deemed as rulers for each ring of hell. The Sins. He took pride in each being, creating them to embody the true notions that came with the knowledge of truth. He put his deepest desires into a little spider clown he called Mammon. All of his wanting and indulgence into a lovely little lava pup, and finally, his truest love and devotions into a spunky little rooster. (And others to come)

But it all turned on him. They became his proudest achievements in decades, but people saw them all as ruthless leaders. And in some cases, that's simply what they became. His desires, indulgence and devotion were viewed as greed, gluttony and lust. Word of these beings would travel to Heaven, only solidifying his tainted image to his brothers. But.. it was okay. He had a family now. The sins all grew to be incredibly close to Lucifer and Lillith, even giving their sweetest child a taste of what a communicative family would look like. Lucifer wanted nothing more than to create a loving environment for his daughter once she was born. And he took pride in the fact that he did.

In my head, I like to think that Lucifer created the sins this way. I see fan art of it all the time, and it's just so?? Cute??? Like Beezlebub feeding of Lucifer's depression vibes and comforting him, and the sins babysitting Charlie in general? aH I eat that shit up. I'm def thinking of including them in stories in the future 🙌

Saturn as DK (man I feel like a woman)

Saturn as Darakaraka (DK) in a birth chart can signify the challenges in a relationship, it can also point to the longevity of certain relationships in your life, especially with people who display Saturnian traits.

What does it say about you? Well, it says you already have all that Saturn stuff under your belt.. well, not quite. There are certain lessons to be learnt with Saturn and these CAN or WILL feel heavy and even like a burden to some. (for me defo)

The dark side of Steampunk: Nox (Part 1)

There is this video made by the Youtuber schnee about Hazbin Hotel, and how its grimsical art style serves the purpose of forming the setting and dictating every writing decision through the usage of its thematic connotations.

It's a pretty interesting video to watch if you are a fan of that series, but I'm not here to talk about that.

No, I'm here to talk about a specific part of that video.

There's a certain timestamp in the video where schnee all of a sudden starts to talk about a movie named "Aeronauts", and how it perfectly nails the Steampunk aesthetic through its understanding of the themes of Steampunk and the historic/social connotations of his it's existence. Here:

For the purposes of his argument, schnee explains to us what Steampunk is all about and compares it to grim dark. While this was fascinating and all, after I've learned the meaning behind the Steampunk aesthetic I couldn't help to think about Noximilliem Coxen the Watchmaker from Wakfu, and how the show writers and character designers twisted the positive vibes of the style to create a more impactful and terrifying antagonist that swims confidently in his own aesthetic.

Today, I'm going to break down how Nox's story uses and twists the meaning of Steampunk to help him stand out.

There's going to be multiple parts to this analysis, so expect me to add their link in the future, but for now, I'm going to focus my attention entirely on the OVA episode and I'll tackle the main series at a later date.

The OVA:

Noximilien is a brilliant inventor specialized in the creation of clocks. His over excitement at the prospect of being the one to find the next big thing is very reminiscent of the classic Victorian scientist present in many stories, usually on the protagonist's side: at the start of his character arc, Milien is the embodiment of the optimism native of the XIX century from which Steampunk stories often take place.

Characterised by the industrial boom, Steampunk (Nox) seeks out to revolutionise the rigid lifestyle of the Victorian era through the wonders of machinery and science. This right here seems like the classic setup for any story of the genre, surely it can't vary more than this?

Unfortunately for our Watchmaker, this is the part where another genre of storytelling is introduced into the mix: the Eldritch horror.

Stories of Eldritch Horror are often characterised by the fear of the unknown: humans going insane trying to understand things that were never intended to be understood, some light ho######ia and ra###m sprinkled here and there, but you can't blame Lovecraft for being a bigot when he was so much worse than that.

Nox finds a mysterious object coming from outer space, it acts weird and suspicious, and he can't understand it, so he takes it back home where he can study it. (I don't know what the bubbles emitted from the cube and the following psychosis are meant to entail, but I think it's up to interpretation).

Immediately, Milien sees the cube as an exciting new discovery, already picking apart its effects on his clock and quickly brushing aside how it affected Igôle. It's honestly not that uncommon in stories of this genre, the inventor tends to be pretty self centered and not particularly emotionally intelligent, it's a flaw that tends to go undeveloped, but it's usually never a problem for these people (Unless they are the villain 🌚).

But here, it's where unfortunately the rift between his family and his desires starts to form: at the beginning of the episode, Galanthe was nothing but supportive of her husband's passion for his inventions and the future, but here, when she asks her husband to let go of his current hyper fixation, she, quite literally, puts a stop to the Industrial dream, one of the cores of this genre; basically rejecting Nox himself, whose the personification of Steampunk.

Naturally, Milien is at fault here, he shouldn't be taking her response too dramatically, but this is going to be the base to his later turn towards the obsession.

While we're here, I might as well mention the beggar and the puppet show.

They're not all that important to Noximilien's character arc (aside from the money problem giving him a ticking clock to all of his actions🌚🌚), but they do provide important pieces of character building and themes for our analysis, so I'm going to briefly touch on them.

The beggar and the puppet show serve to better establish and build up our Steampunk narrative before it can later be destroyed by the Eliacube.

The beggar, is our representation of society. More specifically, Victorian society. He's naturally unimpressed by Milien's creativity and ingenuity, and only seeks to get his part of the bargain. He's strict, rigid, and he's clearly intended to be the obstacle in this situation.

The conflict between the beggar and Milien parallels the conflict between the Victorian society and the positivity of modern science; said tension is the bread and butter of Steampunk and the reason why this aesthetic gained so much popularity in the first place.

The puppet show, created by our inventor, is, again, another establishing piece for our setting, it's the original direction Nox's character was supposed to take, becoming someone who uses their brilliance and generosity to better the world and brighten their family's lives.

If only Milien stayed in bed that night instead of going to temper with the Eliacube, who knows what could have happened.

Maybe, he wouldn't have found the Cube to be all that shiny when he woke up the next morning......

Time travel, it's a funny thing really, even funnier when you take in account all the different interpretations of its inner workings. So, what if we take out boy Spider, and put him in yet another ridiculous situation like we usually do? By that I mean sending him back before even the events of the first film and letting the chaos ensue.

Spider being, well, himself wants to fix whatever he can because he's just built like that. Problem with that is time doesn't like being messed with and will throw hands to keep things as they are. What now? you may ask. Well, Spider is not one to give up easily, he'll roll up his non existing sleeves, put on his game face and.... fail miserably, dyeing a horrible death in the process.

And what now? you may ask again. You're right to be confused, but you're forgetting that there's still a baby to be born to one of the worst of the demons and a pilot, one who is yet to even be called Spider. That's right, this is a time loop.

This one will live trough life, doing the same things as the first one, getting sent back, until he too fails the same way. Then the next one, and the one after that, will do the same, on and on until, eventually, one decides to leave behind a clue for his (future/present/past?) self, just in case. And the dominoes start falling from there.

I won't go into detail of what he does because it would be way to long, but it's basically millions upon millions of tries until he get's to the "golden" run, where he's basically herding people around into "safe spots" without them knowing. Yes, he did throw a fire extinguisher at Quaritch so he would miss Grace's vitals, she still had to transfer but it worked this time (thus Kiri being born, but with her bio mom being alive and well. I leave the rest to your imagination.)

That leaves us with pretty much everyone alive (Yes, Sylwanin is alive. That's how far back he went) and casualties on the human side being kept to a minimum.

All anyone clearly saw of future Spider was the human stranger with dreaded hair, standing over Quaritch's dead body right outside the shack Jake was in ( kinda dark, I know), leading to him becoming kind of his own legend amongst the na'vi (they do figure out he's been helping them all along, their not dumb) This is also why Jake decided to dread his hair, in honor of the stranger who was saving their asses from the background.

Sadly, Spider does die one final time, sufferings from an injury he got while saving Tsu'tey from doing that funny fall. That does fix the paradox of there being two Spiders sooo, win I guess?

After that, everything goes on as normal as it can be, what with everyone being alive and all. They do eventually find the clues left behind by the MANY Spiders and piece together what happened, they don't believe it at first, but all of that, combined with Spider growing up and becoming a spiting image of the stranger leaves them with little else (Imagine learning that your sister, father and a bunch of other important people to you are still alive only because the boy you hate for being the "Spawn of that demon" was sent back in time countless times, died countless deaths, all so everyone else could have a happier life, couldn't be me)

I'm also imagining that Eywa (She's more like a literal goddess here, not full on cosmic being, but enough to see trough time) saw all of it and at the half way point was like "PLEASE STOP! Even one was enough, just please!" all the while the embodiment of Spider's will was cackling like a gremlin " I ain't even half way done!"

Best of all, Miguel O'Hara can't do shit about it (The time loop is a cannon event)

So yeah, that's my thingy to you, a bit long (sorry!) but it is there.

Ooh, well I haven't seen a Spider time travel fic yet, only ones with the other Sully's or with the people from the first movie coming forward in time.

I do loooove a time loop, it's like a little mystery to figure out exactly how the perfect series of events can pan out. I love that Quaritch still dies though, that makes me happy. Spider of COURSE had to throw a fire extinguisher.

I am fascinated by how lonely his time in the past must have been. Especially if he was still a teenage boy. And if he went back as far as saving Sylwanin, dude was like so fucking old by the time they made it to the end there. He was older than Neytiri then so his ass was like nearing the end of middle aged. His bones are creaking their way around the forest. Where did he fucking live, how did he have the supplies to breathe and care for his human needs, how did no one notice him for like forty years?? So many questions.

Also hilarious to imply Eywa had nothing at all to do with this and was just watching.

Why I believe Atsushi will be picked to for the port mafia

I recently retold this theory to my sister and it reminded me of how I haven't actually shared it with anyone yet. So here's my reasoning on why I think Atsushi will be picked.

Lets start with just the simple qualifiers that make him a good candidate. Atsushi is just a really strong ability user. His power literally gives him strength and he can regenerate limbs. Now yes, he can only control this power due to Fukuzawas ability, but we know that he can use his ability without that.

Not only is his ability strong but there's also his connection to Akutagawa. On several occasions now him and Akutagawa have worked together to amazing results. They are literally shin soukoku. Mori already had skk ofc he'd want them. Let's not forget that they were both trained by Dazai.

In mori's eyes Atsushi is just a really good candidate. He's strong. He can heal himself. He works well with Akutagawa, meaning he already can fit easily into the mafia. He is being mentored by Dazai. And if that's not enough he has low confidence and self esteem. Poor Atsushi just really wants to help others, but he's also suffering from near constant anxiety. He's also not crazy intelligent like dazai making him easier to manipulate. Mori not only wants the best candidate but he also needs to have control over the situation as often and as frequently as he can.

And that leads me into why Dazai, despite being the most obvious candidate won't be chosen by mori. We know mori wants him back, and we know that Dazai does really well in the mafia. However as I said Mori needs control. He's terribly meticulous in everything he does, and so bringing Dazai in right now would be putting him in an uncontrollable situation. The Dazai that Mori first met and the Dazai at this point in the story are not the same. This Dazai has a will to be a better person and, despite his suicidal tendencies, he has hope. Younger Dazai did note see hope for the future nor himself, and this made him easier for Mori to control. However, Oda gave him hope which is what I actually believe is one of the reasons why Mori pushed Dazai out of the mafia.

That's also why I don't believe Mori will force him to return. Mori wants Dazai to return of his own volition. Being forced to return doesn't necessarily mean he will cooperate, and Dazai is too intelligent for simple threats. That would return everything back to square one, that being Dazai is a threat to him and the mafia. However, if Dazai came of his own volition then this wouldn't be a problem. Why? Cause him choosing to return means that he has given up hope and Odas last words. A dazai that returns is a Dazai that fundamentally believes that he cannot help anyone and that his blood is actually tainted mafia black.

Mori choosing Atsushi would be both advantageous to him in the now, a strong easily manipulated member of the mafia, and it would aid in the future of Dazai returning to the Mafia.

Atsushi being forced to go to the mafia would be devastating for Dazai. He is a literal representation of all the good he has been attempting since he left the mafia. The orphan that Dazai picked up and mentored, who looks up to him as a good figure in his life. Atsushi wants nothing more than to help others and Dazai had decided to kindly guide him. (This also in direct contrast to Akutagawa, who is a physical representation of all the bad he committed in the mafia.)

Atsushi being forced to go would almost be a slap to face for all of Dazai's efforts. Not only that but Dazai would of course know exactly why Atsushi had been chosen. He had tried to follow what oda said, to head into the light and help others. Now he is faced with the fact that it is his own connection to atsushi that may have lead to him being dragged to the mafia. Atsushi who, once again, is the embodiment of the good he is trying to do.

Mori knows that the only way to get Dazai to return is to break his spirit. What better way to do that than show him that despite all of his efforts, he cannot do good. That he is incapable of working on the side of the light, and that he only brings darkness to those around him. Bringing Atsushi to the mafia would plant that seed of doubt within Dazai's conviction. Dazai will begin to doubt himself and his ability to follow odas words. This combined with constant reminders of his past, (if he were to encounter Atsushi, he would likely also encounter Akutagawa with him), will cause Dazai to lose hope altogether.

Making this the perfect win win situation for Mori. He gets a strong new member who is literally part of shin soukoku, and that member will also be his number one pawn in "Manipulate Dazai Back into the Mafia" Plan

I have more even more reasons on why I think it will be atsushi and why it won't be anyone else but I feel like this covers the gist of my perspective. I really focused on what Mori would do in this post, and how the decision would affect dazai. However I also have reasoning to how this would fit in story wise and atsushi's character as a whole, but im too tired to type it all up rn lol. Maybe ill make a part 2 post?

I DON'T MIND AT ALL My asks are always open to discuss stuff, as long as people keep it civil and not being rude/provoking/aggressive and all, of course xd And no, no one asked me this question, so-o-o-o... I had to go through a little analysis myself, as I wasn't thinking much about how a visions usually chosen for characters, but I think: /It turned out pretty long, ahah, and mostly I agree with you, anon, just go into more on the analysis/ With Leo, I agree with hydro, as we see that those who have this vision usually chases after perfection, being the best at what they do, and using it to protect those they care about. I would also add that he could have a cryo vision. With cryo we see that characters in Genshin who posses it are usually struggle with their inner conflict, and being torn apart between, let's just say, "two world". In Leo's case, it would be him struggling between the role of a leader, that he avoids, and a desire to just enjoy his teenage life and himself (basically, the movie Leo, I think, would get a cryo vision). Tho anemo element, of course, suits his aesthetic best, as his strongest side is his speed, though I wasn't sure if it would fit his character at first, but after a bit of analysis, I think it's actually the best option, recalling his character arc in the movie. It reminded me of Jean, when she was left to deal with being the Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius. The concept of freedom is also suits him, though not literally. It's more about him accepting his weaknesses, let go oh his past self that he wants to avoid, and choosing to move forward for those he care about. SOOO, yeah, I would give Leo anemo vision xd With Donnie it's a bit easier, as I think he would, I agree, receive either electro vision, or dendro. Pyro also suits him in a way, but with pyro I see it's more about just enjoying your hobbies and what you do, when with Donnie it's more about chasing something more. Like with dendro, characters who have it usually observe, chasing knowledge and wisdom, which, in a way, suits Donnie. Electro, of course, like with Leo, suits his aesthetic the best (PURPLE. ELECTRICITY. PURPLE ELECTRICITY. NEED MORE PURPLE OOOOOOOOOOOH), and fits with his character, as characters with electro vision usually live in their own world, seeing it from a different perspective and chasing their own goals despite what people around them think of that, ans it really suits him being a "mad scientist". A little addition, that I think that geo vision could also suit Donnie, and it's possessors are either those who are determined and hard-working (I actually had a thought that Albedo and Donnie have something in common...), the only problem is that usually geo characters have some kind of a big goal. Aside from Donnie wanting to get a Nobel Prize, he doesn't have the kind of a goal that would suit him receiving a geo vision. On the other hand, future Donnie would have a much better chances at getting it, as I see and from what we can speculate, he would be crushed under the weight of responsibility of being "the tech guy", as everything that involves tech would circle around him. Weapons, vehicles, software, codes and all... And it would all embodied in him being a hard-worker in order to keep it all together and keep his family safe. So, yeah, electro vision for Donnie that is.

With Mikey, I agree on pyro vision, if we stick with his artistic personality and enjoying himself and his hobbies the most, but I would also think that it's possible for him to get a hydro vision...? Like said previously, hydro users are usually chase perfection in order to protect those they care about. In Mikey's case, it's not about his skills, but his personality, as we see in the show that he acts a role of a "heart" of the team, keeping them all together. And I would see him getting a hydro vision for his desire to keep his family together, being the best little brother and all that. And, of course, his character arc in the movie also suits this statement, when he was ready to sacrifice himself in order to master his "mystic warrior's" abilities to get Leo out of the prison dimension.

A-a-and, yeah, with Mikey I'm not really sure. Pyro fits his aesthetics, but with hydro it's a bit dipper. But, ok. to be fair, let's stick with pyro xd

With Raph I totally agree on him having either cryo or geo vision. Cryo suits him best in his tv series character arc, as we know from it and from one of the creators tweets, that Raph is basically, like Leo in the movie, is torn apart trying to be both a good leader/big brother/protector of his family, and just being a teenager and enjoying his life. With geo, it also suits him as, like, again, previously said, geo is about being determined and hard-working in order to achieve a big goal that usually involves a well-being of those you care about or who are you surrounded with, which fits Raph pretty well.

With Raph I would stick with geo xd

With other characters, I think Splinter would definitely have a cryo vision (the theme of having an inner conflict with yourself, and being torn between world). Cryo also suits April a bit, because she struggles a bit in the show about living life of a normal teenager, and life with the turtles. I would also add a dendro vision as an option, as those who have it are not only those who chase knowledge and wisdom, but who also are kind and willing to help others.

And with Casey, I would give him a geo vision (a hard-worker who think about well-being of the others).

I watched the whole thing only because I remembered that it's one of your favourite books. It sounds super interesting and I wanted to know your opinion on if you think the book is as difficult to adapt as the video claims

OH boy this is gonna be a long one, response under the cut!

CW: all of the blood and gore that happened in the old west, dead, violence, scalping, probably infant death (it happens in Blood Meridian) and some general critiques and praises of Blood Meridian.

First, I am absolutely TICKLED PINK that you thought of me and even remotely made my name synonymous with Blood Meridian. Literally screeching giggling and kicking my feet.

I will say, you will see the most of Blood Meridian's influence in Bisbee, namely with the Sheriff's past. I do plan on writing him as hardened because of a very similar run-in with the texas-mexican border around that time frame. I plan on capturing the same amount of blood and violence as the book, but not necessarily in the same scope. I want it to be much less flowery than its Cochise counterpart. Bisbee will still be a love story, but way more drenched in blood.

Firstly, I want to talk about the prose in Blood Meridian because, no matter how much praise I can give the book, it was DIFFICULT to read and follow. I do want to do another re-read in the future and quite possibly listen to it as an audiobook to soak it up one more time. Blood Meridian can be best described as a consciousness told by "the kid". It reads like the main character, an uneducated, neglected, fourteen-year-old boy and not as a seasoned western author, but is simultaneously SO VIVID and deliciously rich that I literally devour it like that scene in Ratatoullie where Remi is sampling fruit and cheese together and the flavors manifest as swirly colors in his brain. DELICIOUS. A lot of people DNF this book for this reason, but, creatively, I think it pushed the boundary of what can be considered prose and was really, really interesting- even if it took all of my brainpower to read.

The next thing I wanted to talk about was the comparison to Deadpool and Wolverine (which I haven't seen yet, oops), filmed in the traditional hollywood continuity style. I am not much of a film buff and don't know much about film other than the one class I took in community college. If you want to talk more in depth about film @dr-aculaaa is totally your person! I think if we were to see an adaptation of this book as a film, it would need to be exactly as the prose is: completely unorthodox. I think in this new age of cowboy/western popularity, people are going to want to taylor sheridan-ify it. They're going to want to make it something like a western melodrama like Horizons or 1883, where there still very much is an underlying theme being pushed kind of overtly. I personally think that, if someone was going to attempt it, they would need to take a step back from this new kind of western style, and take a look at Iñárritu. I would like to see it done as something more similar to The Revenant. A historical recount, much more of a stream of consciousness than Costner or Sheridan have done, and with that really blunt brutality. Iñárritu didn't sugar-coat the violence in that. He let the viewer see it at a face-value. Iñárritu is also a big fan of the human condition and psychological drama, which is what would MAKE a film adaptation. I think people are pooling Blood Meridian with Westerns and are wanting to tell it as a western story, when, in reality, the mass appeal to it comes from it being a violent, gory, borderline splatter-punk novel, in a historical western setting.

This is where I have kind of been struggling with it. In Bisbee, I am not necessarily trying to embody McCarthy's prose, but more embody his ideal for vivid storytelling within violent horror scenes in a way that feels correct to me and equates to the brutality in the book. My biggest problem is my own desensitization of gore and violence. For a while there, I was reading so much splatter punk (about 2-3 novels a week depending on the size) that I was literally just dead-eyeing pages as people were being scalped and dismembered. Things don't really make my stomach churn anymore, and now I'm struggling to write these kinds of terrifying, gross descriptions that do what I need them to do, (that, and also coming up with the act of violence itself) while trying to tie in that underlying theme of love in the wild west. These characters are being molded and unmolded and then remolded all over again as I attempt to write this, and I think this ask and that video kind of helped me take a step back and realize that I'm writing it as a western and not as a horror.

I've said this in previous asks, my great granddad was a published western author. He died of complications of polio when my grandma was 13, so I never got to meet him. But I have his writing, and, oddly enough, he wrote like me. And unfortunately, Cormac McCarthy has also passed away in recent years so now I have absolutely no one to ask about writing westerns and melding psychological/body horror with the Wild West, so this is a frontier I will have to brave myself.

Thank you SO SO much for picking my brain, anon! I haven't had to critically think about my reading or my writing in a long time now and this got the train moving again on the production of Bisbee!

Heh, and he gets summoned to take care of a kid. And not just any kid... It's Koyanskaya.

And the (what feels like a last second) reason why she looks like Tamamo: Amaterasu came by (Why? Who tf knows) and granted her a life.

Anyway, this is now done. It's... not as awful as many make it out to be, but this chapter definitely has problems. It feels just so rushed. I know that story chapters and event stories usually have months to "wait in the oven", so to speak, but Tunguska felt like it only had weeks to prepare.

I'm not sure if it's because:

1) Sakurai also wrote the Christmas event and also this one, therefore writing two things back-to-back

2) Covid still causing some amount of trouble (remember, this originally came out two years ago on JP)

3) Sakurai was beginning to write Fate: Lost Einherjar and possibly being roped to be one of the writers for Samurai Remnant, and also possibly beginning to write the story for Summer 7

4) Some sort of combination to the above or some other reason

Like. I'm way more curious to what went on behind the scenes for Tunguska than I am for any of the other story chapters. Give me the goddamn tea.

Any positives? Beyond that it does end (albeit not in a satisfying way), Taigong Wang's nice, and the soundtrack introduced here is good too. And that's kinda it. ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

And besides how rushed it feels, where do I begin with the negatives? The way Ibuki is given semi-amnesia, but the only characterization is "the party girl who is also the brute"? The two mounts who add nothing to the story? Why are there two halves of Koyanskaya now running around in Chaldea? Several characters repeating themselves ad nauseum- scratch that, that's sadly a Sakurai writing tick.

And oh man, Dobrynya and how Koyan came to be. I absolutely despise FGO's take on Dobrynya. Not only because it's yet another case of "it's this person, but it's actually that person!" (this case being the wife Natasha), but her design holds nothing to either of them - and what I mean by that is that her design is almost literally a recolor of her illustrator's FF14 OC. I am not kidding with that. And while that isn't particularly new, Raita did that before with Raikou. But here's the thing, Raikou - even with her "I can't take this character seriously because of her assets" design, she still fits in with where she came from in a more fantasy way. Dobrynya doesn't. And don't get me started with her coloration (oh yes, I want to be snow-blinded by a character's art /s).

And Koyanskaya's backstory... On one hand, being the embodiment of many animal souls because of a natural event (the Tunguska explosion) is a really interesting concept for a Servant, and I kinda want to see other kinds of concepts in the future. On the other hand, how it connects to her love/hate relationship with humanity is a load of crap. "Oh, the animals mistook the sound of the explosion for gunfire-" let me tell you how bullshit that sounds. Animals can be damn intelligent. They know what humans are. Several of them know in what way we do. They also can tell before any of us know when something is wrong, whether it be reacting to something that we don't see or when something like a volcano is going to go off. I don't know if the whole "animals mistook the explosion for gunfire" is something Sakurai herself wrote, or is something that Nasu wrote who just passed it onto her, but it really is just a bullshit reasoning for why Koyanskaya hates humanity. You could've made her the embodiment of something that humanity actually was responsible for, like Chernobyl for example. Just. Why.

I plan to get through Traum later this year, and then after that I'll be waiting for... LB7... Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay...
